Martel Barrett, Chicago Teen Slained At 17 On His Way To School

UPDATE: Martel Barrett was pronounced dead at 5:07 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Details to come.

A 17-year-old boy was shot and seriously wounded while on his way to school this morning on the South Side, Chicago police and family members said.
Martel Barrett was wounded about 9:20 a.m. near 67th Street and Damen Avenue in the West Englewood neighborhood, said Chicago Police Officer Laura Kubiak. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition.

Family members holding a vigil at the hospital said Barrett is a junior at Dyett High School, 555 E. 51st Street, and was on his way to catch a bus for school when he was shot. They said he had stopped first at a grocery store to buy snacks.
“I was always uneasy every day because there’s so much violence,” said his mother, Jacqueline Barrett. “All the kids getting killed. This was my worst fear, something would happen to my baby, my worst fear.”
She said her son, the second youngest of three brothers and two sisters, had not been in trouble, was not in a gang and was something of a class clown. Tall and skinny, he goes by the nickname “Bird.”
“He was the life of the family,” said his aunt, Quincetta Clemons.
Family members said police told them they hoped a security camera at a currency exchange across the street from the shooting may have captured an image of his attacker.
Barrett is the second student from Dyett to be shot this year.
Corey Harris, a basketball player at Dyett, was shot to death by a police officer last month after the officer witnessed the teen shoot someone else, according to authorities.
Harris’ family disputed the police account. Harris, 17, left behind an infant daughter.
